Change? Only if it means PRINCIPLES.

This is a response to a post on Chris Brewer's blog and the ensuing comments.

The primary reason Obama is popular is because he's touching on an amorphous word, "Change". Change means whatever the LISTENER wants change to mean. He's capitalizing on uncritical thought. He's also a very pleasant looking and charismatic man. He just makes people feel better when they're watching him. This is no basis for selecting a President.

Most of the national candidates from the two parties are just mealy mouthed wastes of breath. It doesn't matter what they say, not even to your own face in person, because they're saying something different tomorrow, or whenever someone else is listening.

I'm screaming out for someone to actually have PRINCIPLES and to stand for what this country was founded upon. The Constitution is a document which does everything it can to restrict the Federal Government, but we the people have let the politicians in Washington walk all over it. Some of them think it's good for toilet paper.

I'm not saying it's impossible for you to agree with Obama's stances on issues. I am saying that it's very difficult to pin down what those stances even are. If you think that you agree with Obama more than any of the other 5 candidates, then he is definitely who deserves your vote. If you expect, like I do, your elected representatives to have integrity and principles, then you have to express that same level of integrity and principle in your voting methods.

You're right about capitalizing on uncritical thought, but it's the GOP who's made this an art form. "Country first," "values," "honor," "patriotic," "duty" and "integrity" are just a few of the words the Republicans have hijacked in recent years. Especially since 9/11, the GOP has tried to put it in voters' heads that they are the only party that can or will defend America. And if you disagree with their way of accomplishing, then you are a terrorist sympathizer. The party has ridden this wave through the decade to ram through some of the meanest, unconstitutional, pro-corporate legislation ever to harm this country - moves that would have impossible without a scared and misled populace.

That's why Obama's message of change would by itself be good enough for me (and many). But Obama's message isn't merely about "change." He is brilliant man with concrete ideas on the economy, health care, foreign policy, etc. He regularly touches on them in his stump speeches and lately in his ads as well. They must be seeping in the national subconscious somehow, because they have the right in hysterics. If he were really an empty suit, no one would be outraged on the right. In fact, he might remind them of Reagan in that sense.

Ian, I intended on replying to you quite some time ago, but didn't keep very good track of this post.

Yes, and the Democrats opposed very little of them. Authorization of Force, Patriot Act, REAL ID, Military Commissions Act. There are very few in Washington that deserve our votes. The Democrats, ESPECIALLY Obama, participated and spoke on behalf of the Trillion Dollar Bailouts. More Democrats voted for the Bailout than Republicans.

When will people wake up and realize both parties are taking the citizens for a ride? They're milking us for all we've got and distributing it amongst their closest and most powerful friends. How else could we have in excess of a 500 Billion deficit and over 10 Trillion in debt?
